A general definition of public transportation in Türkiye?
Public transportation in Turkey is characterized by the diversity and sophistication of the services provided, as it includes many types such as buses, metro, trams, minibuses, and trains. Istanbul and Ankara are considered two of the most important cities in Turkey, which are characterized by a developed transportation network, and thus this transportation is shared between and within the cities. Türkiye is also famous for its modern transportation systems that provide comfort and speed of movement within large cities.
What are the advantages of the student’s transportation card?
The municipalities of Turkish cities such as Istanbul and others provide transportation cards at a very large discount to students in the country, unlike regular cards. Transportation for students is subsidized to reduce the burden of expenses on university students.
The student transportation card is distinguished by the fact that it gives its holder significant discounts, to the point that the cost of one trip for a student is approximately 1.25 Turkish liras, compared to the regular card, which consumes approximately 17 Turkish liras per trip.
The student can make his transportation cost 1.25 Turkish liras through a monthly subscription fee of 250 liras, and the student is granted 200 trips to all places via the Istanbulkart application.
What are the documents required to obtain a student transportation card?
- ID card or residence card.
- Student certificate document that can be obtained from the university.
- A recent personal photo with a white background.
Make sure to bring the original documents and copies of them to submit to the authority responsible for issuing the transportation card.
How can I obtain the student’s transportation card?
Students can easily obtain this card by applying for it in one of the following two ways:
For obtaining the card online:
1) Go to the official website of the public transportation company IETT.
2) Create a student account.
3) Fill out the required information, which includes name, national number, phone number, and email.
4) Enter the account activation number that will arrive on your phone and email.
5) After creating the account, you must click on the “I want to get a transportation card” button in Turkish “Ulaşım kartı almak istiyorum” located in the menu.
6) Choose the type of card required: “student card” or in Turkish, “Öğrenci kartı”. Upload the personal photo with a white background and it must be a recent photo of the student.
7) Pay the fee to obtain the card, which is 10 Turkish liras, by linking the bank account.
8) The student enters his residential address accurately to receive the card and press the “Continue” button.
9) The data provided is verified.
10) The card is issued, printed, and sent to the address via Turkish Post (PTT).
With these steps, the student obtains a transportation card online.

To get the card the traditional way:
To obtain a student public transportation card in Turkey, you can follow the traditional method that requires you to visit an IETT branch. You must bring all the documents needed and go to one of the main IETT centers that are distributed throughout the state near the central stations. IETT staff can help you complete the necessary procedures and hand you your card after verifying your documents.

Students benefit from reduced fares for all land transportation such as the metro, metrobus, buses, and trams, and they can also benefit from these reductions in sea transportation to move between the European and Asian sections of Istanbul, in addition to using the cable car.
